2-day Drawing Human Face - Zoom workshop

This workshop is designed to create a relaxed, informative, yet focused working environment for all skill levels. The core of the lesson will be based on drawing, values, edges, composition and creating life-like skin-tone color. Students will focus on the fundamentals of drawing the human head while developing new skills in soft pastel. Nguyen will demo from live model and students will work along with him. Students will learn to use an approach that helps them see the big shapes first, and then go into details towards the end of the session. This is a great opportunity for you to discover your own passion for drawing, or just take your existing skills to the next level.

In this workshop, Cuong will demonstrate his own approach to the old masters technique of oil painting using the verdaccio underpainting. Verdaccio is a greenish underpainting technique used byearly Italian fresco painters. The artist establishes all the values in the underpainting technique. Several transparent over paintings are then applied, achieving a realistic skin toned painting that glows.  Much like his pastel painting technique using the same method, Cuong has perfected an almost step by step method of achieving a great finished painting. Demonstrations and individual attention will be emphasized, enabling each student to produce a finished painting by workshop completion.

Learn artist Cuong Nguyen's Verdaccio technique for creating realistic skin tones using pastel pencils. 

The traditional concept of green underpainting, or “verdaccio”, which has been employed in oil painting since the 15th century. In this ebook,  Nguyen illustrates the technique’s flexibility by applying it to a diverse range of skin tones.  The green layer is effective because it helps to balance the subsequent layers of warmer colors. Green and red are complementary colors, at opposite sides of the color wheel, so their juxtaposition creates a more vibrant effect. The hint of green visible below the surface also suggests the veins just below the skin.

La cosa molto importante di questo libro è la formula del Verdaccio, una tecnica che esiste da secoli e che veniva usata dagli artisti rinascimentali per realizzare un realistico tono della pelle negli affreschi e nei dipinti a olio. Ho studiato il modo di applicare questa formula ai pastelli e ho trovato che i risultati sono molto convincenti.

Des versions de la technique Verdaccio existent depuis des siècles et ont été utilisées par les artistes de la Renaissance pour peindre des tons de peau réalistes dans des fresques et des peintures à l'huile.
